German Shepherd Facts

History[]

In the 1850s in Europe, people were attempting to standardize dog breeds. Dogs were being bred for specific traits that assisted in their jobs of herding sheep and protecting flocks. In Germany, this was practiced within local communities, where shepherds bred and selected. It was noticed that one specific dog breed had the necessary skills to herd sheep, like intelligence, stamina, and speed and keen sense of smell.
